Tony George’s return to driving race cars was met with an accident today at Daytona International Speedway. George, the 47-year-old chief executive officer of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, crashed his Daytona Prototype sports car at about 3:15 p.m. while testing for this month’s Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. He was not injured. George, who raced extensively in his younger days, said he hasn’t driven a race car since 2001. He doesn’t think he’s been in a road race since 1993. The car George crashed was purchased from Eddie Cheever’s sports car team. George, who owns Vision Racing, has entered the Rolex 24 with his stepson, Ed Carpenter, A.J. Foyt IV and Tomas Scheckter as co-drivers. The Rolex 24 is Jan. 27-28.(Indy Star)(1-6-2007)
