been asked, is #24-Jeff Gordon’s 2007 start of the season after 11 races the best ever? I looked back thru 1975 when the current points system started [but wins are worth 10 pts more now, the only change since]. In terms of points, Gordon’s start after 11 races is the 2nd best. Gordon has 1881 points, 3 wins, 9 top-fives and 10 top-tens after 11 races [using 1987 format, Gordon would have 1851 pts, -30pts for the 3 wins]. The best was in 1977 when Cale Yarborough had 1905 points, 5 wins, 9 top-fives and 10 top-tens. Using the current format, Yarborough would have 1955 points [5 wins x 10 pts]. Others close would be Darrell Waltrip in 1979 with 1767 pts [1787 for 2 wins], Dale Earnhardt in 1987 with 1823 pts [1873 for 5 wins] and Ernie Irvan in 1994 with 1799 pts [1829 for 3 wins].(5-14-2007)
