The amazing run of Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus and the #48 team continues in The Chase. Johnson tacked on 34 more points to his lead with a late charge to second place at Atlanta. It is 183 points back to Carl Edwards with three to go, and Johnson has a first and second in his last two starts at Texas Motor Speedway. If he loses 23 or less points over the next two races, he needs to only start at Homestead to cinch his three-peat. Denny Hamlin’s third place run at Atlanta pulled him within 6 points of 10th place Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the final spot to make the stage in New York. Carl Edwards added another strong win in his outstanding 2008 season at Atlanta, climbing two spots to second place. Five podium finishes in seven Chase races is awfully good. It’s just that Johnson has been better. See more on the 2008 Chase, Chase history, wins on my Chase Stats after Atlanta page and my 2008 Chase Rules & History page.(10-30-2008)
