Steve Hmiel was at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, the first day he’s been away from his son Shane since Shane broke his back and neck in a severe crash during a USAC Silver Crown event two weeks ago and gave an update on his son. Shane Hmiel remains in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, facing additional surgery and a long recovery period. Even so, Steve Hmiel is encouraged by his son’s progress, as are the doctors, after what has been, at times, a scary couple of weeks.
