AJ Allmendinger will drive a Nationwide Series car for Penske Racing next month at Road America. Travis Geisler, the teams competition director, told Motor Racing Network of Penske Racings plans Friday morning. Allmendinger tested with the team earlier this week at Virginia International Raceway. The Johnsonville Sausage 200, the first of three road races on the 2013 schedule, is slated for Saturday, June 22. Thats the day before the Sprint Cup Series race in Sonoma, Calif. Penske Racing has used its Cup Series drivers in the #22 Ford this season but with the distance between the two venues, it was decided that Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano would remain in California. That provides Allmendinger with this opportunity. Hell be a teammate to Sam Hornish Jr. Geisler isnt sure if Allmendinger will drive the #22 car in the two other road races this season, at Watkins Glen International and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in August.( Motor Racing Network )(5-31-2013) UPDATE: Penske Racing announced that AJ Allmendinger will pilot the #22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang in two upcoming NASCAR Nationwide Series road course events at Road America and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The move will allow Allmendinger a chance to return to Penske Racings NASCAR program. This season, Allmendinger has been competing in a part-time schedule with the Team Penske IndyCar program. In three races behind the wheel of the #2 Team Penske IndyCar, Allmendinger has a best finish of seventh, which came in the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend.
