Storyline – Grip enhancement helps cars, trucks in “dirty” Daytona air: After running the same tire set-up since July 2013, Goodyear tested at Daytona in spring 2017 and modified its race recommendation for that track. Goodyear has adjusted the grip level through the left- and right-side compounds, which adds on-track stability to the cars and trucks. Because of the close-quarters racing brought on by Daytona’s restrictor plate racing, this added stability will help the cars and trucks as they get buffeted around in the air inside the large packs.

“The fact that the cars race in such close proximity at Daytona makes for a lot of dirty air inside the pack, making for a lot of instability,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “As we have at many tracks over the past couple seasons, we adjusted the tread compounds at Daytona last July to provide more grip. That grip enhancement was not implemented to add speed, but to add stability as cars race within inches of each other at 200 miles per hour. We had a good race in July and are bringing back that same tire set-up for Speedweeks 2018.”

Notes — Cup, Xfinity cars return to Daytona on summer ’17 tire set-up: Teams in all three NASCAR national series will run the same tire set-up at Daytona throughout Speedweeks . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Monster Energy Cup and Xfinity teams ran at the Speedway last summer . . . this is the first time Camping World Truck teams have run either of these two tire codes . . . for the Trucks, compared to what was run at Daytona last February, there is a compound change to both the left- and right-side tires to give the trucks more grip . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Daytona . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Goodyear Blimp: Goodyear’s “Wingfoot One,” based out of Pompano Beach. Fla., will be in the air over Daytona International Speedway throughout Speedweeks . . . the ship will be a part of Fox and Fox Sports 1’s television coverage of the Clash and Cup qualifying during the first week, and the Can-Am Duel, Camping World Truck, Xfinity and Cup races during the second week.
