Storyline – High wear, fall-off highlight racing at Homestead: Over the past several years, Homestead-Miami Speedway has become one of the more high tire wear tracks on the NASCAR circuit. High wear tracks bring tire management into play, with some drivers gaining spots by going hard early in a run, while others gain late by conserving their tires early and having more long-run speed. While the amount of fall-off during a run is more than two seconds per lap, the rate of that fall-off may be different for everyone. That ultimately has a positive effect on the racing as it creates more “comers” and “goers” throughout a run and a lot more passing on the track. That, combined with Homestead’s progressive banking and the pressure of championship weekend, always makes for great racing as NASCAR concludes its season for all three of its national series.

“Homestead is one of the highest tire wear tracks that we have in NASCAR,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “While the track surfaces are a little different, Homestead has traditionally lined up with Chicagoland, as far as a tire set-up. This weekend, we are bringing the same combination we ran in Joliet this past summer. Because of the high wear we see, these compounds provide the endurance and tread wear needed for Homestead’s track surface, while at the same time giving the cars enough grip. That is highlighted by the fact that this right-side tire is one of our multi-zone tread tires with the inboard being more heat and wear resistant and the outboard providing more grip.”

Notes -Cup, Xfinity cars switch to Fontana/Chicagoland left-side tire at Homestead: While teams in all three NASCAR series in action at Homestead this week will run the same multi-zone tread right-side tire code, teams in the Cup and Xfinity Series will run a different left-side code than those in the Truck Series . . . for Cup and Xfinity, this is the same multi-zone tread right-side tire as last year . . . Goodyear’s multi-zone tire features two distinct compounds across the tread – one on the inboard two inches for heat resistance (Endurance Zone) and one on the outboard 10 inches for grip (Traction Zone) . . . this is the first time these teams have run this left-side tire at Homestead . . . compared to what was run at this track in 2017, this left-side features a construction update . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that teams in these two series ran at Chicagoland in July . . . Cup and Xfinity teams also ran this left-side tire at Fontana in March . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Homestead . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
