- Biffle & Larson involved in Happy Hour practice wreck, quotes: #16-Greg Biffle was involved in a practice accident during Happy Hour with #42-Kyle Larson at Auto Club Speedway. Biffle damaged the nose of his Fusion, but the team has removed the hood and is currently working to make repairs. Biffle spoke about what happened immediately afterwards.
Q) WHAT HAPPENED?
Biffle: “We were on new tires. That was our second lap and the 42 was on old tires, so our closure rate was super-fast. I was kind of looking at my mark on the wall and on the race track and he wrecked in front of me and I just couldn’t get stopped. There wasn’t anywhere for me to go. The groove is right up against the fence and I was going probably 15-20 miles an hour faster than he was. By the time I saw him sideways I was catching him so fast that I don’t know what happened.”(Ford Performance)
#42-Kyle Larson hit the wall during Happy Hour practice, and was subsequently hit by the #16 of Greg Biffle.
Q) WHAT HAPPENED?
Larson: “I was running decent laps up there on the top and just got loose there and kind of corrected and just barely hit the wall. I decided to slow down so much that the #16 (Greg Biffle) caught me in the back quarter. They’re still trying to decide if we need to go to a back-up car, or not. I didn’t hit the wall hard, so the frame is all right; there’s just body damage. I was decent there. I’m just disappointed; but it was my fault and I apologize to Biffle for that. I just had to slow down so much that he (Biffle) didn’t have time to react and got into my rear bumper there. So they’re still trying to decide if we need to go to a back-up, or not; it’s more just body damage. They may be able to (make repairs); hopefully they can because I thought that finally I felt okay. It’s been the first time all weekend that I felt that we had decent speed, especially long-run speed. So, I’m disappointed in myself. It was a mistake on my part and hopefully it’s not too much work for them (the #16 team).
Q) WHAT DID YOU AND GREG BIFFLE DISCUSS JUST NOW?
Larson: “Oh, just that he was on fresh tires and was coming and it’s so wide, he wasn’t really looking at my car. And he said by the time I got loose, he didn’t really have whole lot of time to react. So, I hate it for those guys having to work hard on their car, as well. Hopefully we can get ours fixed enough, and so can they to have some speed tomorrow.”
FOLLOW-UP NOTE: The team will make repairs to the #42 Target Chevy and will not go to a back-up car for Sunday’s Auto Club 400.(Team Chevy)(3-19-2016)
- France discusses thrilling start to 2016 season, new manufacturer coming? After two photo finishes and a bevy of side-by-side racing to start the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France joined SiriusXM Speedway host Dave Moody on Friday to discuss the early-season returns on the new aero package employed in the sport’s top series. “Well it’s off to a really good start obviously,” France said. “It’s not a situation where we’re willing to say everything is perfect because we’re always searching for terrific things on the racetrack. The low downforce [package], in combination with Goodyear producing a really good tire to match up to that, has given the drivers more of what they want and they’re putting on one heck of a race.”
The 2016 season opened with Denny Hamlin capturing the Daytona 500 by a scant .010 seconds over Martin Truex Jr. That finish was followed by a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway – the first with the new lower downforce aero package – that saw a record number of green flag passes for the lead (44). And last Sunday in Phoenix, Kevin Harvick edged Carl Edwards to the finish line by the identical Daytona margin of victory of .010 seconds. But it was the end-of-race, sheet-metal crushing aggression displayed by both Harvick and Edwards at the end of the race that most impressed France.
“You’ve heard me say many, many times, that’s classic NASCAR racing when that happens,” France said of the contact made between Harvick and Edwards at the close of Sunday’s race. “But it’s interesting to note that not all the drivers that we have, present or past, would have made the moves that Carl Edwards tried to do to get around Harvick. Harvick did a great job. They both did a great job. But that’s classic NASCAR. We expect that.”
In the wide-ranging 12 minute interview, France also touched on the potential of new manufacturers entering the sport, joining the current stable of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. “There is some interest, and by a couple of different manufacturers and we would be open to that in the right conditions,” France said. “I think a lot of the car companies are understandably looking at the terrific job that Toyota has done by partnering with NASCAR and the success and all the things that comes along with that. They’ve been an incredible success story for a car manufacturer looking to come into a sport that’s very difficult to come in, compete and win every weekend. But there’s an interest. And this is obviously the biggest opportunity in auto racing in North America.”(NASCAR Wire Service)(3-19-2016)
- Bees force NASCAR to abandon flag stand: There was a lot of buzz Friday at Auto Club Speedway. Literally. A swarm of bees invaded NASCAR’s flag stand Friday afternoon at the 2-mile oval, meaning Xfinity Series practice got underway with no green flag and no flag man. FOX Sports cameras zoomed in on a collection of bees – dozens, at least – clinging to a ledge in the flag stand. Obviously, NASCAR decided it was better to not have a flag man for practice than to expose any officials to needless stings (drivers can still hear about the track conditions from their team radio communications). After practice, a beekeeper arrived and sprayed some sort of liquid at the swarm — many of which fell in a bucket. But NASCAR spokesman Tom Bryant said there were remnants of “less than happy bees in the flag stand area” before Sprint Cup Series qualifying, which meant the flag man had to stand on an elevated platform near the start/finish line in order to wave the green. “We anticipate no problems with this situation tomorrow or at any other point in the weekend,” Bryant said.(USA Today)(3-19-2016)
- Vickers to drive at Martinsville and maybe some sports cars: Brian Vickers, subbing for injured Tony Stewart in the #14 Janssen Arnie’s Army Chaqritible Foundation Chevy, met with members of the media at Auto Club Speedway and discussed a few things including his future schedule, the transcript in part:
Q) WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE SCHEDULE FOR RACING IN THE SPRINT CUP SERIES?
Vickers: “Well I think practice is next and then qualifying. I’m really thinking long term. I just want to get through tomorrow (laughs). To be honest with you, the only think I do know is I’m going to have a weekend off next weekend. I’m kind of really enjoying this schedule. I don’t know if NASCAR is up to changes, but I am loving the weekend off, weekend on thing. That has been very relaxing, very fun. I get to race, but I also get some time off. I’m going to get it again with Easter weekend, but as of right now I’m going to be in Martinsville in the Janssen Arnie’s Army Foundation car again. Really pumped about that to kind of continue that forward. Then we are figuring out everything from there. Nothing has really changed I think everyone is really just kind of waiting to see how Tony shakes out. As much as I and I can genuinely and honestly say this, as much as I want to race this car as long as I can, because it’s a great team and a great car and a great opportunity. I really want to see Tony back in it. I have been in his shoes. I know exactly what it’s like. It’s his last season; he deserves to be in this car as much as he can be. I’m honored to race it as long as I need to and as long as I can, but I’m happy to turn the keys back over as soon as he’s ready.”
Q) ARE YOU ALSO LOOKING AT THE POSSIBILITY OF GOING BACK TO RACING SPORTS CARS AGAIN?
Vickers: “Yes, I am open to racing everything that has a seat, four wheels and a steering wheel if the opportunity presents itself. I would absolutely go back to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I would absolutely go back to the BC Series. I would be open to racing anything. I love racing. I love being in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. I think it’s one of the greatest forms or racing in the world. It’s fun for the drivers. Everyone always talks about, yeah, but your car’s don’t’ have wings, and I’m like yes, they don’t and they pass more and they race side-by-side and we get to bump each other. It’s a fantastic form of racing, but there is also a lot of merit to the other stuff. I’ve had the opportunity to drive a lot of different cars in different series and they are all amazing. I think in the racing community, it’s funny, everyone in the racing community agrees that racing is one of the best forms of sports and most entertaining and fun and exciting for the drivers and the fans. Now, they all may debate which series they think is the best, but they all agree that all of them are great. I would second that. I would love to be back in a sports car again and anything else that comes along.”(Team Chevy)
Ty Dillon who has been a co-sub in the #14 Chevy, is scheduled to run the #95 Circle Sport – Leavine Family Racing Chevy at Texas, so looks like Vickers could be in the #14 Chevy at Texas.(Team Chevy)(3-19-2016)
- Phoenix TV Ratings UPDATE: NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Phoenix drew a 3.6 overnight rating on FOX Sunday afternoon, down 5% from last year (3.8), and down 25% from 2014, when the race was the second of the season (4.8). The 3.6 overnight is the lowest for NASCAR from Phoenix since 2010, the last time it aired on a Saturday night (3.4). The six-year low continued a season-long trend for NASCAR. Las Vegas tied its lowest overnight since moving to FOX in 2001, Atlanta earned the lowest overnight since 2000 for the second race of the season, and the Daytona 500 had its second-lowest overnight since live start-to-finish coverage began in 1979. After overnights dropped by double-digits at Daytona (-16%) and Atlanta (-27%), Sunday’s race was the second straight to drop by only five percent. While a decline is still a decline, the single-digit slide marks a noticeable improvement. For the weekend, NASCAR on FOX trailed only the NCAA Selection Show (3.7) among sports programs. It will almost certainly come out ahead when the final numbers are released.(Sports Media Watch / ShowBuzz Daily)(3-15-2016)
UPDATE: NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Phoenix drew a 4.0 final rating and 6.6 million viewers on FOX Sunday afternoon, down a tick in ratings and 5% in viewership from last year (4.1, 7.0M) and down 25% in both measures from 2014, when it was the second race of the season (5.3, 8.8M). Kevin Harvick’s win ranks as the lowest rated and least-watched Sprint Cup race from Phoenix since 2010 – the last time the race took place on a Saturday night (3.7, 6.0M).(Sports Media Watch / Sports Business Daily), see race-by-race TV Ratings for 2016 and a comparison chart on the 2016 TV Ratings page.(3-19-2016)

- Harvick comments on the downforce package: #4-Kevin Harvick, race winner last week at Phoenix, met with media at Auto Club Speedway and discussed the new downforce package, the transcript in part:
Q) CAN YOU GIVE US A SENSE OF THE NEW DOWNFORCE PACKAGE SO FAR THIS YEAR, AND TELL US WHAT YOU THINK THE RACING WILL BE LIKE THIS WEEKEND IN FONTANA? HOW HAS THE PACKAGE IMPACTED THE RACING?
Harvick: “As a driver, especially last week; when you look at myself and Dale (Earnhardt) Jr., and you look at the way you could go through traffic, it seems like the cars were affected a lot less by the aero push and being around each other. They seemed a lot less dependent on where you are in the field. Obviously they are still not going to be as good as they were if you were the lead car, but I think we’ve definitely made some headway. I think there’s obviously a lot of notes that have been gathered and from a driver’s standpoint, I think this is the race we’ve all been looking forward to the most just because of the fact that you have some high speeds and lots of racing lanes and the cars are going to slide all over the place. So, it’s definitely a weekend that we’re all looking forward to. This has probably been one of our better races over the past several years, so it’s going to be a fun weekend.”(Team Chevy)(3-19-2016)
- Auto Club Speedway a rough, difficult track: The rougher a track is, the more drivers seem to like it. That’s certainly the conventional wisdom at Auto Club Speedway, which features pronounced bumps on the backstretch, abrasive asphalt and distinct seams between the racing lanes. “You could write a book about a lap at this place,” said Carl Edwards, runner-up to Kevin Harvick by .010 seconds last Sunday at Phoenix. “There’s so much happening out there-where you place your tires, how you enter the corner, what the guy in front of you is doing. All of those things add up to a lot different balance. Turns 1 and 2, as many times as I’ve been here, I still don’t feel like I have it figured out. There’s spots that I like to run, there’s things I like to do, but there’s some spots out there and it’s like, man, I can’t quite figure out what’s happening. When you hit this point in the race track and the car moves and I can’t repeat it all of the time, so you never really know what you’re going to get. I think that’s good. It’s a little bit unpredictable, it’s definitely tough and, to me, that’s part of the fun.”
Edwards, however, didn’t have as much fun as he would have liked during Friday’s opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice. He was 25th on the speed chart, and he pointed to a dilemma that can haunt drivers and crew chiefs at the two-mile track: Whether to change the car or change your racing line? “Your car can drive terribly, and then you can move around a little bit and it drives pretty well,” Edwards said. “So then you’ve got to decide, ‘Well, is that where I want to race, or do I want to race over here where it’s terrible? Should we work on it?’ It’s tough. It’s hard to decide exactly what you want. The fun is that you can actually change it. You can do things. If the car isn’t working well in one spot, you move somewhere else and try something else. You’re not locked into a tiny little box where everybody has to run in the exact same spot.”(NASCAR Wire Service)(3-19-2016)
- Busch could be fined for Fontana post-race: Kyle Busch could face penalties after NASCAR completes a review of his conduct following Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. A NASCAR spokesman confirmed to Motorsport.com on Saturday night the sanctioning body would be reviewing Busch’s post-race actions and comments. Busch was upset with NASCAR’s decision not to throw a caution – which could have locked Busch in as the winner if the field was frozen – but he still managed to finish second. However, he failed to fulfill any of his post-race media obligations, either on pit road or in the media center, after the race. Drivers can be penalized for not fulfilling required media obligations. NASCAR is also reviewing Busch’s comments after the race over his team radio, a portion of which were played on the TV broadcast by Fox Sports. At one point, Busch says, “Debris all over the race track and they don’t throw a yellow. I’m just so pleased with you NASCAR. Thanks. Y’all are awesome. Fixing races. How about ….” NASCAR’s code of conduct, which was updated in February, calls for fines of between $10,000 and $50,000 and/or probation for comments that disparage the sport and/or NASCAR’s leadership. An accusation of “fixing races” could certainly fall under that category.(Motorsport)(3-19-2016)

Kyle Busch lead 133 of the 150 laps and was leading on the final lap, but cut a tire down going into turn 1. He was briefly passed by Suarez, who then ran out of gas on the backstretch. Busch retook the lead but Dillon passed him coming off turn 4 to take the win. It was the only lap Dillon led all day.
There were just 4 cautions for 16 laps and 12 lead changes among 8 leaders.
The average speed was 143.008mph.
