After parting ways with Rahmoc early in the 1986 season, Lake Speed found himself at a career crossroads. Would another team hire him? Was his NASCAR career over?
It was at that point Speed felt led to go in an entirely new direction. He would start his own team, from scratch. After building a shop and hiring crew members, he put together a third-place finish in the 1987 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.
That was no longer good enough. Lake Speed wanted to win.
