Storyline – NASCAR’s longest race to challenge teams getting back up to speed — While NASCAR returned to action at Darlington Raceway, the sport gets back to another level of normalcy with the running of the traditional Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day weekend.  The biggest factor of this race is that it starts in the daylight and ends at night on one of the most temperature sensitive race tracks on the circuit.  The change in track temperature will affect the balance of the cars, making it important for crew chiefs to keep up with the track.  NASCAR Cup teams will have a total of 13 sets of tires for their longest race of the season (12 race sets plus their qualifying set).  Pit road will play a big part in the running order throughout the event, with teams that are quickest on all those four-tire stops will pick up valuable spots without having to do that on the track.

“While Charlotte is not necessarily considered a high tire wear track, it is one of the most temperature sensitive tracks we race on,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.  “The Coca-Cola 600 starts during the day and ends at night under the lights, combined with the fact that teams have a large number of sets of tires to go the 400 laps, making this event one that truly highlights the team aspect of our sport.  Teams will have to keep up with a changing track throughout the event and master their pit stops in order to stay up front for the end of the race.”

Notes – First time for this tire set-up at Charlotte: Teams in all three NASCAR national series will run the same tire set-up at Charlotte this coming week . . . this is the first time these teams have run this combination of left- and right-side tires at Charlotte, though NASCAR teams have run each of these two tire codes at other tracks in the past . . . this left-side tire code was run by Cup and Xfinity teams at Kansas last October . . . this is the first time Truck teams have run this left-side . . . compared to what was run on the Charlotte oval last May, this left-side features a construction update that brings it into line with what is run at other speedways . . . this right-side tire code was run at Chicagoland (all three series), Darlington (Cup and Xfinity) and Homestead (all three series) last season and on Cup and Xfinity cars at Darlington last week . . . compared to what was run at Charlotte last spring, this right-side features a construction update for teams in all three series, and also a compound change for the Trucks only (more grip) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Charlotte . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Goodyear to run special “Honor and Remember” sidewall at Charlotte: Since 2010, for one weekend per NASCAR season, Goodyear has changed the branding on the sidewall of its racing tires in a show of support for the United States military and fallen heroes.  This being the 11th year of that program, the official tire supplier to NASCAR’s top three series will work with the “Honor and Remember” organization for the second straight year.  The standard “Eagle” on the tires’ sidewall will be replaced by the Honor and Remember logo on all Cup and Xfinity tires at Charlotte Motor Speedway this May, as is part of the larger, industry-wide effort known as “NASCAR Salutes.”

Honor and Remember is a national organization based out of Virginia that has a mission to “perpetually recognize the sacrifice of America’s military fallen service members and their families,” according to its website.  The organization recognizes fallen military personnel from all wars or conflicts, and with those from all branches of service.  They do so primarily by dedicating the specially designed Honor and Remember flag, which is intended to fly continuously as a tangible and visible reminder to all Americans of the lives lost in defense of our national freedoms.
