Despite media reports and rumors amongst NASCAR teams, the race at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend has not been canceled, confirmed track president Eddie Gossage.
Additionally, there have been no reports of any plans to seek a cancellation of the action at TMS, despite multiple requests to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office. Gossage said media reporting the race isn’t happening is doing a disservice to the racing community.
“That’s news to me,” Gossage told Kickin’ the Tires. “We are running. The virus isn’t anywhere near as bad in Texas as the media indicates. What the media doesn’t take into consideration is that Texas is one of the most populous states. Mortality rates rank Texas as 39th. We have 10 deaths per 100,000 (people). New York (state) is 168 per 100,000. Big, big difference.”
A website is reporting an “anonymous source” saying teams will be notified Tuesday whether they are racing at Texas, or not. However, everything is a go from the Texas Motor Speedway viewpoint.
According to track personnel, fans are still expected at this time and Gossage said he has heard nothing about canceling the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 this weekend.
