Robert Wayne Hamke, 73, of Kannapolis, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2020 at his home.
Robert was born August 8, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Robert Elmer Hamke and the late Eva Marie Cooney Hamke. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Carol Peters; and step-son, Steve Anderson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra Lea Herman Hamke; son, Robby Hamke and wife, Emily; granddaughters, Madison and Mayce Hamke; sister, Susie Bakeeff; and step-daughter, Cindy Anderson.
He was an accomplished race car driver winning numerous races, including the 1969 and 1977 Florida’s Governor’s Cup. He relocated his business, Hamke Race Cars and Parts, to North Carolina from Florida, where he continued to be one of the most renowned chassis builders of all time. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time reminiscing with friends, and relaxing and swimming at his second home in Florida.
