Andy Petree was joining what had long since been established as one of the sport’s most competitive teams AND drivers … Richard Childress Racing, with Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel. What could Petree bring to the table that the team didn’t already have? He was replacing the popular, and now-retired, Kirk Shelmerdine. Banners hung from the walls like the legendary rafters of the Boston Garden. The fact is, his new teammates were skeptical … and that was putting it mildly. The going was rough in the beginning, but Petree was able to prove himself to both Earnhardt and the team. This is his story.
