After Dale Earnhardt moved to Richard Childress Racing for good in 1984, they became one of the most dominant forces the sport of NASCAR has ever known. Six championships. Win after win on the race track. Untold millions of dollars. And somewhere along the way, Earnhardt became synonymous with the number 3 and first Wrangler, then GM Goodwrench as the sponsors of his efforts. Maybe most importantly was Earnhardt’s relationship with Chevrolet. Earnhardt WAS Chevrolet, and Chevrolet WAS Earnhardt for the longest time. But, according to Larry McReynolds, at the time the crew chief for Robert Yates Racing, there WAS a point in time when discussions cropped up that would have had Earnhardt make the move from RCR to RYR … and from Chevrolet to Ford. If Earnhardt had actually jumped ship, the move would have rocked the world of NASCAR to its very foundations.
