Morgan-McClure Motorsports had seen some success on the track going into the 1990 Winston Cup season, but it had been spotty, here and there, once in a while, when the circumstances fell just so.
When Ernie Irvan came on board early that year, he seemed to be exactly what the team needed. Likewise, the Abingdon, Virginia-based operation gave the California native the foundation he’d so diligently seeking. They finished third in their very first race together, then sat on their first pole together just a couple of weeks later.
And they were only getting started. This is team owner Larry McClure’s story.
