The Scene Vault: Jimmy Means’ Helping Hands

By Rick Houston

An independent’s independent in NASCAR, Jimmy Means never enjoyed the kind of financial backing that propelled bigger teams to wins, poles and championship contention.

Instead, Means made do with a handful of full-time employees and volunteer help at tracks across the country. What’s more, those intrepid volunteers paid their own way. If they were lucky, they MIGHT have been able to find a spot on the floor of the very few hotel rooms Means was able to provide.

That’s just the way Means did things, as frugally as possible, so that he might be able to make it to the next race. This is his story.
