The Scene Vault: Paul Andrews Talks Loss of Dale Earnhardt, Alan Kulwicki

By Rick Houston

Paul Andrews had very sadly been through the devastating loss of Alan Kulwicki, so when tragedy once again unfolded on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, the nightmare began all over again.

Andrews, serving at the time as crew chief for Dale Earnnhardt Inc. driver Steve Park, knew what it was like to lose a driver, team owner and friend. Losing Earnhardt was devastating, and for many reasons, a turning point in NASCAR history.

It was different working with Earnhardt than it had been with Kulwicki, and their losses hit him differently. This is Paul Andrews’ story.
