Storyline – Road course/oval combo calls for specific tire: When NASCAR added the Daytona International Speedway road course to its schedule in the middle of last year, Goodyear decided to bring its Watkins Glen tire to the event because of the high speeds expected to be run.  For 2021, the tiremaker has made an adjustment to their recommendation for Daytona, switching to the tire run on the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, because both feature a combination of road course and high-banked oval sections.

“We’ve landed on the Charlotte Roval tire for Daytona because both courses offer similar challenges,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.  “After last year’s race at Daytona, we felt like the Cup cars could use a little more grip, so the compound on the Charlotte tire gives them that.  At the same time, because both courses use large sections of the ovals, the construction of this tire is one that can handle that well.”

Notes – Switch to Charlotte Roval tire at Daytona road course: Teams in all three NASCAR series in action on the Daytona road course will run the same tire . . . like at other NASCAR road courses, teams will run the same Goodyear tire code on all four corners of the car . . . this is a different tire than the one these teams ran on this course last season, with a compound change for more grip . . . this code is the same one Cup and Xfinity cars ran on the Charlotte Roval the last two seasons . . . some Cup teams also ran it in the Busch Clash on this course last week . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Daytona.

Wet Weather Tires – White-lettered tires on hand: Goodyear will bring its wet weather radials for use by teams in all NASCAR series on the Daytona road course, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . this tire was last run in NASCAR competition by both Cup and Xfinity Series teams at the Charlotte Roval last October . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear’s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
