Storyline – Tire management will be a factor again this week at Richmond: Coming off a race weekend at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR moves on to Richmond Raceway, which is not as well known for wearing tires but that remains a factor none the less. As tires wear at Richmond, drivers will move up the track to search for more grip, and that will mean that the track has multiple grooves and more opportunity for passing. Also, as at Darlington, tire management will come into play, with drivers who are easier on their tires early in a run being able to make up time or run longer than those that ran hard right after taking fresh rubber.
“Richmond has traditionally been known for putting on some great racing, and one of the reasons for that is that it has become what we consider a high tire wear track,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “As tires wear at Richmond, lap times fall off. Drivers that manage their tires early in a run will have them fall off less and gain from that later in the run. Also, as the track takes rubber, drivers will be able to search around a little or move up the track, creating multiple lanes and more side-by-side racing.”
Notes – Teams return to Richmond on popular tire set-up: NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series teams will run the same tire set-up at Richmond on Saturday . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup teams ran at this track in April, and NASCAR national series teams have run at Richmond, Phoenix, New Hampshire and Gateway since the beginning of 2020 . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Richmond.
