Richmond / Texas post-race penalties announced; Byron & Bowman penalized UPDATE

UPDATE: “Because we will be best served by devoting our time and resources to competing each weekend, our team will not pursue an appeal of penalties issued on April 6. The area of the race cars NASCAR focused on is not related to our performance on the track.”

ORIGINAL POST 4-6-2023: NASCAR has released the post-race penalty report from the Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway and the Craftsman Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Hendrick Motorsports teams of #24-William Byron and #48-Alex Bowman were both penalized following inspection at the NASCAR R&D Center.

Both were issued L1 penalties for:

Sections 14.1 D: Overall Assembled Vehicle Rules; 14.1.2.B: Engineering Change Log; 14.5.6.B: Greenhouse

The penalties were:

Crew chiefs (Brian Campe & Greg Ives) were fined $75,000 and suspended from two NASCAR Cup Series championship points events, beginning, April 13 (after Bristol).
The teams and drivers were assessed with the loss of 60 points and 5 NASCAR Playoff points.

Noted rule book sections:

14.1. D. Except in cases explicitly permitted in the NASCAR Rules, installation of additional components, repairs, deletions, and/or modifications to Next Gen Single Source Vendor-supplied parts and/or assemblies will not be permitted.

14.1.2 B. All parts and assemblies must comply with the NASCAR Engineering Change Log.

14.5.6.B. The greenhouse may be modified to accommodate a windshield wiper motor where required; these modifications will be permitted for all racetracks. The greenhouse modification must conform to the following drawing:

In the Truck Series, the teams of #2-Nic Sanchez, #4-Chase Purdy, and #51-Jack Wood were penalized for :

Sections 14.3.3.3.2.C: Engine Oil Reservoir Tank Encasemen; 14.9.3.2 C & G: Engine Oil Reservoir Tank; 14.19.A : Assembled Vehicle Overall Rules

The teams and drivers were penalized 10 owner and driver points.

Noted rule book sections:

14.3.3.3.2.C: The entire perimeter of the bottom of the engine oil reservoir tank encasement must remain open.

14.9.3.2 C: Panels and/or boxes installed on the engine oil reservoir tank will not be permitted.

14.9.3.2 G: All engine oil reservoir tank mounting brackets/supports must be a minimum of 2.0 inches above the lowest point of the engine oil reservoir tank body.
