NASCAR suspends Chase Elliott for wrecking Denny Hamlin at Charlotte; other penalties announced

NASCAR announced Tuesday that Chase Elliott has been suspended for one race for intentionally wrecking Denny Hamlin at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

AND: Hendrick Motorsports says, “We understand NASCAR’s need to maintain consistency in its officiating. The penalty will not be appealed, and we will submit a formal request for a playoff waiver.  Corey LaJoie, 31, will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 this weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway. We are grateful to Corey for stepping in and to the team at Spire Motorsports for making him available.”

AND: In addition to Elliott’s penalty, #34-Michael McDowell’s team has been penalized for the loss of a wheel during the Coca-Cola 600. Crew members (Scott Brzozowski and Adam Lewis) have been suspended from the next two events.

In the Xfinity Series, #18-Sammy Smith had one loose lugnut and Crew chief Jeff Meendering has been fined $5,000. The #74 team of Dawsom Cram were penalized 10 driver and crew points for an air duct violation.

In other penalty news, Merill Noel and Ronnell Willson have been reinstated by NASCAR and Derek Hartnagel was indefinitely suspended for a violation of the behavioral policy.
