Pioneering British Racecar Driver Katherine Legge unveiled today her first children’s book, titled “Kat’s Magic Helmet.” The vibrant and emotionally-rich book was co-authored with Red Racer Books Publisher Andy Amendola and illustrated by Board-Certified Art Therapist Ashleigh Mower.
“I know firsthand how it feels to be an outsider, having often been the only girl competing against boys,” said Katherine. “This book is for every kid who’s ever felt unsure or left out. I want them to know they’re not alone—and that they absolutely belong.”
“Kat’s Magic Helmet” is inspired by Legge’s real-life start in karting at a young age. The beautifully-illustrated, premium children’s book encourages young children, especially girls, to push past fear, trust their instincts, and to take their place wherever they choose to go. In the book, readers meet 9-year-old Kat, who is shy and unsure, but ready to race! Her father hands her a “magic” helmet that instantly sparks courage. What little Kat ultimately finds out is that the magic isn’t in her racing helmet, but within herself.
Written and illustrated for families and educators alike, “Kat’s Magic Helmet” retails at $19.99 and is perfect for anyone seeking empowering stories children ages 3 to 8-years-old to read. The 10”x10” premium hardback is especially well-suited for young readers showing an interest in racing, confidence-building or sportsmanship, as well as young fans of real-world role models like Katherine Legge, whose achievements were made through stories of perseverance.
“Katherine is an incredibly talented race car driver, but more importantly, she shares the magic of desire and self-confidence, so others can believe in their dreams,” said Racing Pioneer and Indy 500 Driver Lyn St. James. “Not everyone wants to be a competitive athlete or race car driver, but young people—especially girls—can be inspired by her story of determination.”
The book’s talented illustrator, Ashleigh Mower, uniquely met Katherine as a teenager, and later became the designer of Katherine’s real racing helmets. Mower’s artwork for Legge’s debut children’s book brings a deeply personal, emotional touch to both women’s journeys of self-belief and bravery.
“Kat’s Magic Helmet” is sold at Amazon and select specialty bookstores, with more to be announced soon. The book is also an officially licensed product of INDYCAR™ and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
