NASCAR returns to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the second time this season, and Goodyear is bringing familiar Goodyear Racing Eagle tire setups to teams across the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. All three series’ setups mirror those already used at comparable tracks earlier this year.
Cup Series teams will run the same left- and right-side tires used at Talladega’s spring race in April, and at Daytona International Speedway on both visits this season.
Xfinity Series teams will also use the same combinations as in April’s Talladega round. The series’ left-side tires are the same specification as those used at both visits to Daytona this season, while the right-side specification is the same as that used at both visits to Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Teams competing in the Truck Series, which didn’t race at Talladega in April, follow a similar allocation pattern: they will use the same left-side tires as in February’s Daytona race and the same right-side tires as from Atlanta.
“Teams are already familiar with the Goodyear Racing Eagle tires we’ve brought to Talladega, which will help them plan their race strategies,” said Rick Heinrich, Goodyear NASCAR product manager. “We have seen tire wear increase incrementally over our past few visits to Talladega, but strategy at NASCAR’s longest track is more commonly dictated by teams alternating between four-tire, two-tire and fuel-only stops, depending on the run. Often, a driver’s tire changes are determined by the need to stay in line with teammates and maintain position in the draft.”
Xfinity and Truck Series teams will also use inner liners at Talladega, as is customary on tracks 1-mile and longer.
