NASCAR announces superspeedway package changes for Daytona

A working group in NASCAR has been discussing potential changes to the superspeedway rules since the spring Talladega race.

The results of the efforts are several changes to the rules package for the NASCAR Cup Series event at Daytona International Speedway on August 29.

Currently, the update is for the Cup Series Daytona race only.

Daytona Package Update:

  • 4-inch spoiler and wide splitter stuffers (same as intermediate tracks)
  • Safety equipment remains the same as current superspeedway package
  • Engine tapered spacer reduced to 27/32-inch (~465 horsepower)
  • New spoiler braces
  • Spoiler deflection device redesigned to accommodate 4-inch spoiler

Performance Aspects:

  • Single-car speeds estimated at 2-3 mph faster than current qualifying
  • Maximum pack speeds estimated in the same range as current
  • Dynamic passing maneuver CFD indicates completion of a pass with a 5-mph run is more likely with the new package
