For nearly seven decades, Shirley Hipple has watched every high-octane turn, pit stop, and checkered flag from her living room TV. Now, as she approaches her milestone 100th birthday, the lifelong racing superfan just proved that the adrenaline rush of stock car racing has no expiration date.
This September, Hipple traded her couch for the track at Michigan International Speedway (MIS), gearing up for a heart-pounding NASCAR ride-along and exclusive pit lane tour—fulfilling a dream 70 years in the making.
Hipple, a resident at Waltonwood Carriage Park in Canton, Michigan, fell in love with motorsport in the 1950s taking her young children to local dirt tracks at Groesbeck and 8 Mile in Detroit. Over the next 70 years, her passion never wavered: she transformed her room into a racing shrine, sported her favorite driver Jimmie Johnson’s jacket, and never missed a race broadcast.
She finally achieved the ultimate bucket-list thrill through Waltonwood’s signature Adventure program, which turns extraordinary dreams into reality for senior residents.
Suiting up in full racing gear and strapping into an authentic stock car, Hipple felt pure horsepower roar beneath her on the steep banked oval. Alongside her high-speed lap, she went behind the scenes on pit row to meet drivers up close, showing the world that passion burns just as bright at 99 as it did decades ago.
Feeling the rumble of the pavement and standing behind the pit wall was more than a celebrated milestone—it was proof that life’s greatest adventures can happen at any age.
“At Waltonwood, we believe that passions don’t fade with age,” said Sara Bailey, Vice President of Sales for Waltonwood. “Seeing Shirley’s lifelong dream come true is what our Adventure program is all about.”
