    � Darlington Raceway was built as a 1.25-mile paved superspeedway in 1949-1950.
    � Darlington Raceway hosted the first 500-mile race in NASCAR history and the first on asphalt on Sept. 4, 1950 – 75 cars competed in the event – Curtis Turner won the pole at 82.034 mph, and the race was won by Johnny Mantz (Plymouth, 75.250 mph, 6:38:40).
    � The track was re-measured to 1.375 miles in 1953.
    � The track was re-configured to 1.366 miles following the spring race in 1970.
    � The track was repaved in 1995.
    � The 2005 race was the first Saturday night race at Darlington.

  • Carl Edwards wins at Darlington: #19-Carl Edwards won the Bojangles’ Southern 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway for his 2nd win of the season, 1st win at Darlington and 25th career win. Edwards led just 15 of the 367 laps, but took the lead on the final pit stop of the night and held off the rest of the field. Early in the race he stayed out under caution and, on old tires, fell back through the field and lost a lap. He got his lap back on the 11th caution and worked his way back through the field.
    #2-Keselowski finished 2nd followed by #11-Hamlin, #22-Logano, #4-Harvick, #41-Busch, #18-Busch, #88-Earnhardt, Jr., #78-Truex, Jr., and #42-Larson.
    Pole sitter, #2-Keselowski, led the most laps – 196, but could not get around Edwards at the end.
    By finishing 7th, #18-Busch moves to 27th in the points standings. He is now 83 points ahead of 31st and has locked himself into the Chase.
    #4-Harvick continues to be the points leader, now 42 points over #22-Logano.
    There were 24 lead changes among 11 drivers. There were a record 18 cautions for 89 yellow flag laps.
    The average speed was 111.993 mph.

    Pole sitter #2-Keselowski chose pit stall 1 [as do most pole sitters].
    Outside pole sitter #41-Busch took pit stall 7, with an opening behind it.
    #4-Harvick, who starts 3rd took the 8th pit stall, with an opening in front of it.

  • NBC releases details of Darlington coverage: Retro paint schemes are only part of the throwback celebration with the Southern 500’s return to Labor Day weekend for the first time since 2003. NBC, which will broadcast Saturday’s Xfinity race and Sunday night’s Sprint Cup race from Darlington Raceway, also will add to the nostalgia. Among the nods to years past in Sunday’s broadcast:
    ” Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett and Dale Jarrett will call the race at some point, taking over briefly for NBC’s crew of Rick Allen, Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte.
    ” Features during the Countdown to Green show include Squier’s essay on Darlington Raceway, Kyle Petty talking with Bill Elliott and Chase Elliott on the 30th anniversary of Bill Elliott’s Southern 500 win that also earned him the Winston Million bonus, and Jeff Burton going around the track in the NBC Sports Toyota Camry On Track Car while Petty is on track as well in the Wood Brothers’ #21 car from 1971.
    ” Booth and studio talent will appear in 1970s-era clothing.
    ” Also featured throughout the weekend will be retro highlights, graphics and music.

  • Chase clinch scenarios at Darlington: Drivers have just two races left to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup – Darlington and Richmond. As of now, 11 drivers are qualified for NASCAR’s playoffs with wins as long as they start the next two races and remain in the top 30 in points: #48-Jimmie Johnson, #18-Kyle Busch, #20-Matt Kenseth, #4-Kevin Harvick, #22-Joey Logano, #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr., #41-Kurt Busch, #78-Martin Truex Jr., #2-Brad Keselowski, #11-Denny Hamlin and #19-Carl Edwards.
    The five remaining drivers on the Chase Grid have to either visit Victory Lane or stay high enough in the points standings where they don’t get bumped by a new winner outside the top 16. These drivers are #1-Jamie McMurray (76 points above the cutoff line), #43-Ryan Newman (+63), #27-Paul Menard (+54), #24-Jeff Gordon (+52) and #15-Clint Bowyer (+35).
    The winless drivers who have won at Darlington in the past and have yet to earn Chase berths this season are Gordon and Greg Biffle.

    For the first time, a winless CAN clinch a spot in the Chase. If a repeat driver wins at Darlington, a winless driver would need to have a 45 point lead on the fifth-highest of the winless drivers (or 44 points, depending on tie-breakers).   • Highlights of NASCAR’s changes on pit road in 2015:
    ” Number of officials on pit road during race reduced from 43 to 10.
    ” 45 HD cameras will be mounted on the grandstand side of each track and directed toward pit road to monitor pit stops and officials call or clear penalties.
    ” Every camera looks at two pit stalls and the cameras record 100 percent of the race.
    ” Video feeds from cameras are fed to a production truck in the TV compound where eight NASCAR officials monitor stops for violations.
    ” Pit road speeding penalties will still be called from race control based on scoring loops.
    ” Pit stalls are laser measured
    ” Missing Lug Nuts are no longer a penalty.
    ” Fueling can start once car is stopped.
    ” Fueling can continue until car leaves pit stall.

  • Notes: Teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will run completely different tire set-ups at Darlington this weekend . . . in Sprint Cup, this set-up features the left-side tire code (D-4650) run at Indianapolis and the right-side tire code (D-4646) run at Kentucky earlier this summer . . . compared to what was run at Darlington last year – and in response to NASCAR’s lower downforce package – this left-side features construction and mold shape changes, while this right-side features a compound change for more grip . . . this tire set-up came out of a Goodyear test at Darlington on June 30, after the new rules package was announced . . . drivers participating in that test were Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski and Tony Stewart . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Darlington . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

  • Throwback Tires: In keeping with NASCAR’s throwback efforts and the return of the Southern 500 to its traditional spot on the schedule on Labor Day weekend, the tires run at this weekend’s Darlington races will feature different sidewall markings . . . replacing the yellow Goodyear lettering that became standard in 1992 is a white, stencil-look design that harkens back to the mid-1970s.
