RACE RUNDOWN….News & Links

  • Logano wins at Talladega: #22-Joey Logano won the CampingWorld.com 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway for his 6th win of the season, 1st win at Talladega and 14th career win. Logano led 20 of the 196 laps.
    It was an unusual end to the race. First, coming to the green flag for the green-white-checkered finish, #48-Johnson and #42-Larson spun out as the cars got through the restart zone. NASCAR had thrown the green flag, but put the yellow back out before the cars got to the start-finish line and froze the field to attempt another restart.
    Then on the next restart, #4-Harvick, who had been reporting engine problems, failed to get a clean start. #6-Bayne passed Harvick, but made contact with him trying to get back in line and was spun out. Several drivers accused Harvick of intentionally wrecking Bayne. About a dozen cars were collected and NASCAR threw the caution just past the start finish line.
    NASCAR had to review video tape to determine Logano was in the lead at the time the caution came out and establish the finishing order for the rest of the field.
    Logano won all 3 races in the Contender round of The Chase.
    #88-Earnhardt, Jr. finished 2nd followed by #24-Gordon, #2-Keselowski, #19-Edwards, #27-Menard, #78-Truex, Jr, #15-Bowyer, #17-Stenhouse, Jr., and #41-Busch.
    #11-Hamlin, #31-Newman, #88-Earnhardt, Jr., and #20-Kenseth were eliminated from the Chase.
    The race went caution free for the first 131 laps, the longest green flag strecth to start a race this season.
    There were 30 lead changes among 18 drivers and 3 cautions for 18 yellow flag laps.
    The average speed was 167.311mph.

  • Highlights of NASCAR’s changes on pit road in 2015:
    ” Number of officials on pit road during race reduced from 43 to 10.
    ” 45 HD cameras will be mounted on the grandstand side of each track and directed toward pit road to monitor pit stops and officials call or clear penalties.
    ” Every camera looks at two pit stalls and the cameras record 100 percent of the race.
    ” Video feeds from cameras are fed to a production truck in the TV compound where eight NASCAR officials monitor stops for violations.
    ” Pit road speeding penalties will still be called from race control based on scoring loops.
    ” Pit stalls are laser measured
    ” Missing Lug Nuts are no longer a penalty.

  • NASCAR Green-White-Checkered Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR’s Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt.   • Superspeedway Qualifying Format for Talladega: The modified qualifying format at superspeedways will debut at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, October 24th. Qualifying will consist of the following:
    � Two rounds of qualifying, with the top-12 posted lap speeds advancing to the second round
    � Race vehicles taking one, timed lap in each round of qualifying
    � Each race vehicle will be released in a predetermined timed interval as determined by NASCAR, with the sanctioning body reserving the right to have more than one vehicle engaging in qualifying runs at the same time
    � Qualifying order for the first round will be based on the slowest to fastest single lap speed posted in the first practice session; final round qualifying order is determined by slowest to fastest speeds from the first round
    � A 10-minute break will occur between the first qualifying round and the final round
    � Upon completion of the first qualifying round, the field will be set with positions 13 and beyond determined from first round qualifying speed
    � The 12 fastest vehicles from the first round will have their speeds reset for the final round with starting positions 1-12 determined by the fastest laps in the final round
    � NASCAR will impound race vehicles following each qualifying lap; vehicles advancing to the final round will be allowed to adjust tape and utilize a cool-down unit during the 10-minute break only.(10-23-2015)

  • How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

  • Notes: Teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Talladega this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Sprint Cup teams have run at this track since last October . . . while Camping World Truck teams ran this left-side tire code (D-4596) at Talladega last year, this is the first time it is paired with this right-side tire code (D-4630) . . . compared to what Truck teams ran at Talladega last October, this right-side features a compound change for better wear . . . in addition to Talladega, NASCAR teams have run this left-side tire at Daytona this season . . . they have also run this right-side tire at Kansas, Las Vegas and Michigan in 2015 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Talladega . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
