Eligible drivers for the 2010 Sprint Showdown
- To be eligible for the Sprint Fan Vote (and the Sprint Showdown), drivers must have finished in the top 50 of the final 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings, attempted to qualify for the 2010 Daytona 500 or competed in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event during the 2009 or 2010 season. The driver accumulating the most votes, who also finishes the Sprint Showdown qualifying race on the lead lap, will earn a spot in the prestigious All-Star field. The Sprint Fan vote winner will be announced immediately following the completion of the Sprint Showdown.

Sprint Showdown: $897,587; winner gets $51,735
- Kurt Busch wins the All Star Race: #2-Kurt Busch won the Sprint All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, winning over $1 million. It is Busch’s first All-Star race win and Penske Racing’s 2nd win. #56-Truex Jr., who won the Sprint Showdown, finished 2nd, followed by #20-Logano, #11-Hamlin, #14-Stewart, #17-Kenseth, #71-Labonte, #39-Newman, #29-Harvick and #12-Keselowski. 13 cars were left after some late wrecks with #88-Earnhardt Jr. finished 11th followed by #16-Biffle and #48-Johnson [who won two segments and was running fast before spinning out with two laps to go. #18-Busch felt his teammate #11-Hamlin put him in the wall, Busch fell back and cut a tire down and hit the wall and took out #9-Kahne. Other’s who did not finish: #83-Mears, #5-Martin, #1-McMurray, #00-Reutimann, #24-Gordon and #99-Edwards.

• Kurt Busch won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, pocketing $1,078,309.
• This is Busch’s first All-Star race win in his ninth try.
• Penske Racing scored its second All-Star win.
• Busch led three times for 20 laps, including the final eight. Busch is the eighth driver to win over a million dollars in the All-Star race.
• Busch won the first segment, was fifth in the second segment and 11th in the third segment.
• It is the second win for Dodge in the All-Star race; Kasey Kahne won in 2006.
• Jimmie Johnson (13th) surpassed $3 million in All-Star winnings Saturday night, most of all drivers.
• The driver winning the All-Star race has gone on to win the Coca-Cola 600 six times.
• Segment 1 winner: Busch: $25,000.
• Segment 2 winner: Jimmie Johnson: $25,000

SPEED, Sunday, May 23 at 12:00am/et and SPEED, Wednesday, May 26 at 12:00pm/et - Top five vote getters announced for the Sprint All Star Vote: Sprint announced the top five vote recipients in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Fan Vote along with (in alphabetical order) #43-AJ Allmendinger, #47-Marcos Ambrose, #31-Jeff Burton, #99-Carl Edwards and #19-Elliott Sadler. Fans have casted a record 1.1 million votes in this year’s NASCAR All-Star Fan Vote. Voting will continue until one hour prior to the start of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday, May 22, at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Fans can cast votes for their favorite eligible drivers using the NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile application, by visiting NASCAR.com or at the Sprint Experience, located in the midway at every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. As an incentive for Sprint customers, every wireless vote submitted from a Sprint or Nextel device counts double in the driver standings. The eligible driver accumulating the most votes, who also finishes the Sprint Showdown qualifying race, will earn a spot in the prestigious All-Star field. The Sprint Fan Vote winner will be announced immediately following the completion of the Sprint Showdown.(5-22-2010)
The 2010 All-Star Challenge format is as follows:
· Segment 1: 50 laps with a mandatory green-flag pit stop on Lap 25 at which time teams must pit and take on four tires. Following the end of Segment 1, the caution flag will be displayed for an optional pit stop.
· Segment 2: 20 laps with the caution flag displayed at the end of Segment 2 for an optional pit stop.
· Segment 3: 20 laps with a 10-minute break at the end of Segment 3. Teams may make normal adjustments to their cars during this break. The finishing order after the third segment determines the field’s lineup for the pace lap prior to the start of the fourth segment.
· Segment 4: Once the field takes a lap behind the pace car, all cars must enter pit road for a four-tire stop. The order in which the cars exit pit road is how they will line up for the 10-lap shootout with only green-flag laps counting.
The 2010 Sprint Showdown:
· Segment 1: 20 laps with the caution flag displayed for an optional pit stop
· Segment 2: 20 laps
- Pit Stall Selections – All Star Race: The selections of pit stalls for the Sprint Showdown and All-Star Challenge at Charlotte Motor Speedway have been made. #11-Hamlin got to choose first since his pit crew won the Pit Crew Challenge and chose pit stall one for the All-Star Race. The finishing order of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge determined the order of pit selection for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.
#6-Ragan will start first in the Sprint Showdown. Qualifying was rained out and was set by the qualifying order. Ragan’s team choose pit stall 1
#2-Busch who was awarded the first position when qualifying was canceled, which was set by qualifying order, chose pit stall 22, which is the 2nd pit stall on pit road with an opening in front of it. With 21 cars in the All-Star race and 29 in the Sprint Showdown, most have openings in front or in back of each.

- All-Star Challenge qualifying rained out: due to weather, so the field was set by the rules on the entry blank, by the qualifying draw [just for this race, not for points races]. #2-Kurt Busch will start first, followed by #20-Logano, #12-Keselowski, #1-McMurray, #18-Busch, #00-Reutimann, #48-Johnson, #24-Gordon, #83-Mears, and #39-Newman. #11-Hamlin would start 12th, but lost an engine is practice and will have to go to the back.(5-21-2010)

At the 2009 NACS show, Mars Snackfood US unveiled its M&M;’s Pretzel Chocolate Candies, which combine sweet and salty in every bite-size piece. - Pit Bulls scheme for Biffle in All-Star race: The #16 3M Ford Fusion will have a slightly different look when it takes the track for the 2010 All-Star weekend. In addition to having a special paint scheme for the night race, the car will also feature the 3M Pit Bulls logo on the lower hood and decklid. The 3M Pit Bulls was the name chosen by the fans through a 3M Car Care promotion for the #16 team pit crew. In an effort to honor their hard work, 3M has decided to put their logo on the car for
the Sprint All-Star weekend. Opened: 1960 - Sports Legends Set for Pre-Race Activities at NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race : Sprint announced that NASCAR legends Junior Johnson and Richard Petty have been named as grand marshals and that basketball icon Michael Jordan will serve as the honorary starter for the 26th running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on
May 22 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. North Carolina native Junior Johnson is recognized as one of the early superstars of NASCAR. In his 14-year driving career, Johnson racked up 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins and 47 pole positions. As a team owner, Johnson fielded entries for many legendary drivers, including Leeroy Yarbrough, Neil Bonnett, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough, capturing 132 wins and six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championships. Johnson retired from his ownership role in 1995.
Known by many as “The King,” Richard Petty earned that title by winning seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championships and compiling a record 200 career victories. Still involved in the sport he loves, the North Carolina native is co-owner of Richard Petty Motorsports, which fields four entries in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The two NASCAR legends will be honored at pre-race ceremonies before giving the famous command for drivers to start their engines. They will then lead the field during the pre-race parade laps in the grand marshal car. Both members of the inaugural group of inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the two men will be formally enshrined in a ceremony scheduled for Sunday, May 23.
Recognized by many as the greatest basketball player of all time, Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, will wave the green flag to start the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. The hall of famer, who grew up in North Carolina, is the first former NBA player to become majority owner of an NBA franchise when he purchased the Charlotte Bobcats earlier this year. - Vickers released from hospital, heads back to Charlotte UPDATE 3 : Red Bull Racing Team announced that #83 driver Brian Vickers was released Friday night from the Washington, D.C.-area hospital where he has been hospitalized since Wednesday night. Vickers, age 26, was cleared to fly to Charlotte, N.C., where he will meet with a group of specialists as to the specifics of his condition. The status of Vickers’ return to racing is uncertain. UPDATE2: Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody is reporting that Brian Vickers could return to the seat of the #83 Red Bull Racing Toyota in time for this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Sources close to the situation say that Vickers will undergo testing later this week to determine whether blood thinning drugs have dissolved the blood clots that formed in his legs and lung last week. If so, and if his doctors are satisfied with the level of blood-thinners in his system, Vickers could be cleared to compete on Saturday night. Casey Mears remains on standby in the event that Vickers is not cleared to compete, and a decision on his status could come as late as race day.(5-18-2010)

CATS Route Provides Easy Access to Speedway: The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), the City of Concord and Charlotte Motor Speedway have partnered to bring Saturday bus service from Center City Charlotte to the track. Starting from the Charlotte Transportation Center, race fans can take the 79X Concord Mills Express to beat the traffic and enjoy the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at the speedway for just $6 round-trip. The route will run every 20 minutes from noon to 6 p.m. on May
22. Return trips will begin immediately after the checkered flag as race fans make their way to the buses near the track’s main entrance. The Challenge is a competition that pits some of NASCAR’s top
drivers against one another to see who can deliver the best tire-smoking burnout, allowing the drivers a chance to showcase some of their best celebratory skills. Looking to take Harvick’s crown with the most impressive burnout will be fellow NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers #33-Clint Bowyer, #18-Kyle Busch, #20-Joey Logano, #1-Jamie McMurray, #39Ryan Newman and #00-David Reutimann. Drivers will compete in stock cars identically prepared by the NASCAR Racing Experience. Similar to 2009, judges will score the drivers’ creativity in a 30-second freestyle burnout. This year, however, drivers can also gain bonus points by knocking down strategically placed obstacles.
Drivers will start from Turn 4 and trigger the 30-second Pennzoil Ultra Countdown Clock as they cross the starting line. Voting will continue until one hour before the start of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race, Saturday, May 22, at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. Fans can cast unlimited votes for their favorite driver during the voting window. Sprint customers can vote using the NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile application on their Sprint or Nextel devices. As an added incentive for customers, every wireless vote submitted from a Sprint or Nextel device counts double towards a driver’s vote total. To download the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile, which is free with any data plan, Sprint customers should text “NASCAR” to 7777. Past Sprint Fan Vote winners include Ken Schrader (2004), Truex, Jr. (2005), Kyle Petty (2006), Kenny Wallace (2007), Kasey Kahne (2008 – Sprint All-Star Race Winner) and Logano (2009).

The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, set for Saturday, May 22 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (SPEED, 7pm), will consist of four segments, concluding with a 10-lap sprint and a $1 million pay-out to the race winner. There’s an added twist this year before the green flag drops for the final segment: once the field takes a lap behind the pace car, all cars must enter pit road for a four-tire stop. The order in which the cars exit off pit road is how they will line up for the final 10 laps, placing an even greater premium on the efficiency of the pit crews.The 2010 format is as follows:
· Segment 1: 50 laps with a mandatory green-flag pit stop on Lap 25 at which time teams must pit and take on four tires. Following the end of Segment 1, the caution flag will be displayed for an optional pit stop.
· Segment 2: 20 laps with the caution flag displayed at the end of Segment 2 for an optional pit stop.
· Segment 3: 20 laps with a 10-minute break at the end of Segment 3. Teams may make normal adjustments to their cars during this break. The finishing order after the third segment determines the field’s lineup for the pace lap prior to the start of the fourth segment.
· Segment 4: Once the field takes a lap behind the pace car, all cars must enter pit road for a four-tire stop. The order in which the cars exit pit road is how they will line up for the 10-lap shootout with only green-flag laps counting.“We saw last year just how competitive this format can be, with Tony Stewart battling Matt Kenseth for the win on the final couple of laps,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “With the addition of the four-tire pit stop, there is going to be even greater competition between the pit crews on who can get their driver serviced and out the quickest. I think the fans are in for quite a show.”
Mark Martin, a two-time NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race winner, is looking forward to competing in his 21st all-star event this year, which is the most of any driver.
“I love the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race as much as the fans do,” said Martin.
The eligibility standards for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race remain the same: race winners from either the 2009 or 2010 season through May 16 or any past champions of the all-star event or NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (over the previous 10 years) are eligible for the race. In addition, the top-two finishers in the Sprint Showdown, a 40-lap preliminary race scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the winner of the Sprint Fan Vote, all advance into the all-star race lineup. Joey Logano won the Sprint Fan Vote last year.

The Winston Open was known as the Atlanta Invitational in 1986 - Vickers released from hospital, heads back to Charlotte UPDATE 3 : Red Bull Racing Team announced that #83 driver Brian Vickers was released Friday night from the Washington, D.C.-area hospital where he has been hospitalized since Wednesday night. Vickers, age 26, was cleared to fly to Charlotte, N.C., where he will meet with a group of specialists as to the specifics of his condition. The status of Vickers’ return to racing is uncertain.
