NASCAR Considering Major Engine Rule Changes for 1998

Three significant technical changes are coming to NASCAR Winston Cup racing engines in 1998. Although at this posting there has been no official statement from the offices at Daytona Beach, our sources indicate that these race engine rule changes start at the Daytona 500 in 1998: 1) GM cars get a new “corporate” race engine: the SB2; 2) Engine compression ratio will be reduced from 14:1 to 12.0 – 12.5:1 for all engines regardless of brand; 3) UNOCAL’s 110 octane leaded race gas will be replaced by its 100 octane unleaded fuel.
