Oil Company Mergers

Of particular interest in the NASCAR garage is the current merger mania among oil companies, and Ashland Oil (Valvoline sponsors Martin) is considered the next target of a takeover. With British Petroleum(BP) taking over Amoco, Bill Davis (who has a
three-year contract with Amoco for a Busch-Winston Cup deal, with Dave Blaney) and his team are following that situation closely. And Pennzoil, one of racing’s top sponsors, with two Winston Cup teams (Earnhardt-Park and Chuck Rider-Derrike Cope) and Indy-car teams too, is acquiring Quaker State (which has been a major Winston Cup sponsor for years, once with a full car, now as a major associate with Rick Hendrick’s teams)(JournalNow) (08-18-1998)
