Ernie Irvan crashed during BGN practice this morning, hit the drivers side pretty hard from what sources at the track tell me. Took the EMS almost 30 minutes to extract him. No word on any injuries, let’s hope he is OK…..just in, Irvan was airlifted to the hospital, is conscious now and has all of his feeling, etc. – but they aren’t taking any chances — UPDATE: from the AP – Ernie Irvan crashed this morning during practice for the BGN NAPA 200 at Michigan Speedway in his #84 Federated Auto Parts Pontiac. He was airlifted to a hospital, but Jay Frye, the general manager of Irvan’s Winston Cup team, said that trip was more a precaution than a necessity. “We believe he’s going to be just fine,” Frye said. Rescuers had to cut off the top of his car to get Irvan out after the vehicle slammed into the wall near turn 4. No idea whether another car hit Irvan’s or if he simply lost control of it. As he was removed from the car, Irvan picked his arm up in what looked like a wave. He was reportedly conscious and talking. Irvan was nearly killed in a crash at the same speedway exactly five years ago to the day. Frye said Irvan would not race this weekend. He said that because of the seriousness of his earlier acident, the team does not want to take chances this time.( WRAL/AP also a story on NOL ) Dick Trickle is running the #36 in practice which is scheduled to go out 10th in qualifying. Irvan was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in nearby Ypsilanti, Mich., where he’s been listed in fair condition. Irvan is alert, orientated and able to move his arms and legs. The hospital is prepared to admit him for further testing.
