The #36 car approached Bill Davis about putting BGN Pole Sitter Dave Blaney in the #36 M&M Pontiac but doing so would have jeopardized his rookies status for 2000 and the team is contracted to run five Cup races in the #93 Amoco Pontiac, so Davis declined(RPM2Nite). Also the #26 team asked Steve Grissom about driving this weekend but Grissom’s height kept him from doing it. They were going to have to change the seat and only had a couple of hours to get someone in to practice. To do that and change the seat too was going to take too much time, so they went to Dick Trickle, who practiced well and qualified the car 15th. The crowd delivered a huge roar when Trickle qualified 15th after just eight laps of practice
