Cal Wells and his Precision Performance Inc. are close to signing a driver for their Tide-sponsored car for next season. Wally Dallenbach remains at the top of Wells’ list and is expected to hear from Wells Monday, sources say. Dallenbach is also under consideration for the #36 M&M’s Pontiacs. Driver Ernie Irvan announced Friday he was retiring from the Winston Cup series effective immediately. Jerry Nadeau is driving the car for the remainder of the 1999 season. Dallenbach met with MBII Motorsports over the weekend to discuss the job, sources said( That’s Racin’ ) — AND Wally Dallenbach said that he’s going to wait another week before making a decision on next year’s team. Dallenbach, according to sources, is looking at the Wells team and the Ryan Pemberton-Jay Frye team.
