Walter Ballard, who was the 1971 NASCAR Grand National (Now Winston Cup) Rookie of the Year was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident near his home in Charlotte on March 24, 2000. He is still in intensive care at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte. He was the owner of one of the first “CUP” cars that Dale Earnhardt drove(4-4-2000)
