Talk continues about Jim Mattei selling or taking on a partner for his race team, which fields #7 Chevy for driver Michael Waltrip. The discussion centers on Jim Smith, who owns the #2 CTS team(Mike Wallace). One source(That’s Racin’ source) said Sunday that Smith may be in Richmond next weekend to make an announcement about becoming involved in the team(That’s Racin’)(5-1-2000) UPDATE: Jim Smith, is interested in owning a Cup team, but says his talks about buying Mattei Motorsports or becoming a partner has not been that serious. Anyhow he will field a car for his CTS driver, Mike Wallace at Lowes Motor Speedway for the Coca Cola 600, the Brickyard 400, Richmond in September and Phoenix(Winston Cup Scene) AND Jim Mattei and his entourage are in Richmond this weekend. In an unusual appearance, all three owners involved with Mattei Motorsports are going to be on hand.
