Nominees for Hall of Fame: Dale Earnhardt, William C. “Bill” France Jr., A.J. Foyt, Glen Wood and Ed Otto are the five nominees on the National Motorsports Hall of Fame ballots to be mailed to the voting members this week. Earnhardt is the seven-time Winston Cup champion who died Feb. 18 in a crash in the Daytona 500. France is the former NASCAR president and the current chairman of its board of directors. Foyt is a legendary motorsports champion driver who is now a car owner. Wood is a former driver and long-time stock car team owner. Otto was one of the sport’s pioneer promoters. Earnhardt is eligible under the “extraordinary candidates” provision approved by NMPA members in January, established for individuals who have made unusually and overwhelmingly significant contributions to stock car racing. “Extraordinary candidates” must be approved by a unanimous vote of the Hall of Fame nominating committee. Eligible NMPA members may vote for none, some or all of the nominees. All candidates receiving votes on at least 65 percent of the ballots cast will be elected to the hall. Voting ends June 30 and the results will be announced in July(That’s Racin’)(5-30-2001)
