Winston back on a car? Less than a month ago, Kmart’s support of Haas-Carter Motorsports seemed secure despite its financial woes. But Kmart said last week it is suspending its sponsorship of the #26 and #66 Fords, driven by Joe Nemechek and Todd Bodine, and its presenting sponsorship of the Daytona 500. Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. Could this be the impetus that helps put the Winston brand back on a racecar in Winston Cup? Because of the national tobacco settlement, R.J. Reynolds tobacco brands had to withdraw their backing of all sports besides Winston Cup racing but can exercise their right to advertise in NASCAR. This would be a great time to reunite with owner Travis Carter, who says Haas-Carter has enough resources to run the 26 and 66 cars in the first two Cup races, at Daytona and Rockingham.(Sporting News)(2-4-2002)
