Vasser to NASCAR? Jimmy Vasser, the 1996 CART champion while driving for Chip Ganassi, nearing the end of his first season at Team Rahal, chances are slim he’ll be back for a second. With primary sponsor Shell either cutting back or going away, Rahal is unlikely to be able to meet Vasser’s asking price. That has the 36-year-old driver knocking on doors. “Team Rahal is not in position to keep the team intact, or so I’m told,” Vasser said. “There’s interest all around the paddock, but nobody’s able to make a commitment.” Vasser was tempted to go to NASCAR a few years ago and is looking that way again. He said a BGN deal that would allow him to continue to run the Indianapolis 500 would appeal to him. “My goals are still long-term. Nobody’s ever won a CART championship and a Winston Cup championship, and I’d like to be the first,” he said. “But at this point, it’s hard to make choices until there’s some options on the table.”(Indianapolis Star)(10-7-2002)
