A violent wreck during Friday’s Busch series practice has left Jamie McMurray a little sore and short one car, but otherwise OK. As the practice session drew to a close Friday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, McMurray’s #1 Dodge was hit from behind by Michael Waltrip in Turn 4. Both cars careened into the wall as fuel from McMurray’s car was ignited by exhaust from Waltrip’s car. Waltrip was able to drive away, while McMurray hurriedly escaped from his car before it was engulfed in flames. “The fire was on me. I could see it wrapped around my left arm, but I couldn’t feel it,” McMurray said. “It took me a little while to get out of the car. I … was used to a different type of latch and I got a little confused trying to get out. I was really worried about if it started to burn, how bad it was going to burn.” McMurray’s Yellow Racing team had only a 2002 model Chevrolet as a backup – the team moved to Dodge in the off-season. Both McMurray and Waltrip were to start Saturday’s Busch race from the rear of the field after moving to backups.( ThatsRacin.com )(3-1-2003)
