NASCAR cleared reigning ARCA champion Frank Kimmel to drive in Sunday’s Pocono 500 in relief of Bill Elliott, despite Kimmel not getting any seat time because of bad weather on Saturday. Elliott, who broke bones in his left foot in an accident at The Winston all-star race, has not decided whether he will use a relief driver Sunday, but car owner Ray Evernham has been making preparations in case one is needed. NASCAR typically requires relief drivers to have spent some time in the car during a practice prior to the race. “We went already and spoke to (Winston Cup series director) John Darby and (NASCAR President) Mike Helton just to make sure if Frank didn’t get a chance to practice the car if he’s cleared, and he is cleared,” Evernham said. “He’s driven plenty Winston Cup races, and he’s driven here in a Winston Cup race. He has raced here quite a bit and was on track yesterday. If Bill gets out of the car, Frank is cleared to drive it.”( ThatsRacin.com )(6-7-2003)
