Everybody expected Ryan Newman to beat his track record….but not many expected Elliott Sadler to better Ryan Newman. Sadler toured the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in 27.948 (193.216 mph) to take the Bud Pole for Saturday Night’s UAW-GM Quality 500….his 4th pole of ’05 and the 6th of his NEXTEL Cup career. And we still don’t know if he had it matted!
Jimmie Johnson (3rd) has his best starting spot since he lined up on the outside pole at Watkins Glen in August….but qualifying was rained out for that event. This is his best qualifying effort on time since he had the pole at Chicagoland in July.
Bobby Labonte (5th) has his best starting spot since he qualified 4th at Phoenix in April.
Casey Mears (9th) had his best qualifying run since he lined up 3rd at Chicagoland in July.
Kyle Petty (16th) has his best starting spot since he qualified 10th at Richmond in September of 2003! (This one was hard to believe!)
STREAKIN….Jimmie Johnson has 4 Top-10 starts in the last 5 races.
Tony Stewart has 4 Top-10 starts in the last 5 races.
