2016 SUNOCO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR SCORING SYSTEM
The scoring system to determine the Sunoco Rookie of the Year varies from NASCAR’S point system for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. The following is a breakdown of the Sunoco Rookie of the Year scoring system:
* A 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 point system is used for scoring finishing positions by the rookies. The highest-finishing rookie in each race earns 10 points, the second-highest, nine points, etc.
* Of the 36 races, only the top 17 are counted in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rookie race.
* In order to be eligible for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award, a driver must attempt to qualify in at least eight events out of the first 20 events.
* Attempting to qualify for a race earns the rookies one bonus point, which is a bonus that is available for all 36 events.
* Bonus points are awarded for a finish in the top 10. A rookie who wins a race is awarded 10 points, second place gets nine and so on down the line with a 10th-place effort earning one point.
* Following the final race of the season, the highest-ranking rookie in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship receives 10 bonus points. The second-highest rookie earns nine points, third receives eight, etc.
* During the final weekend of the season, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year panel meets and rewards favorable conduct in the following categories: Conduct with NASCAR officials in the garage and pit areas; conduct and awareness on track; personal appearance and relationship with the media. The panel rates each driver, with scoring ranging from a maximum of 10 to a minimum of 1. Total points will be averaged from each panel member’s ballot. The points derived from the panel will be added to the entry, competition, and bonus points after the final race of the season to determine the overall Sunoco Rookie of the Year winner.

Chase Elliott wins 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year: #24-Chase Elliott’s rookie season began with a Daytona 500 pole award and is now coming to a close with another award at champion’s week. Just days after celebrating his 21st birthday, Elliott was awarded the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers 2016 Awards Luncheon. While accepting the award, Elliott recalled a special memory from his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 start. “Last December I was preparing to join the #24 team but for me it hadn’t really sunk in that I would be competing full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time,” the rookie said. “When we got to Daytona, to me it finally felt real when we strapped in and started to go. One of my favorite moments that weekend was before the race started, Jeff (Gordon)’s son Leo came up and he gave me a high-five before the race which I thought was the coolest thing, it really put things in perspective for me and I realized how big of a deal this was for not just myself, but everybody involved.”
Elliott — under the instruction of crew chief Alan Gustafson and with the help of the #24 Chevrolet SS team — led an impressive rookie campaign that resulted in a 10th-place finish in the season standings. The driver logged 10 top-five finishes, 17 top-10s and led a total of 358 laps throughout the 36-race season. The 21-year-old also claimed two pole positions at Daytona International Speedway in February and Talladega Superspeedway in May. Chris Buescher makes NASCAR’s Chase in his rookie season For the first time ever, Front Row Motorsports is in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup. Chris Buescher will be driving the #34 Love’s Ford Fusion this weekend at Chicagoland to open stock car racing’s playoffs. “This is a big day for our team, and I’m incredibly proud of everybody who worked so hard to get us here,” team owner Bob Jenkins said. “Everybody at FRM, Roush Fenway Racing, Roush Yates and Ford worked together toward this one goal and it’s so gratifying to see all that work pay off and see our #34 car competing for the championship.” Here’s how NASCAR’s playoffs work: 16 drivers make the playoffs. This year, the contenders are Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray. A driver either makes it into the playoff field by virtue of cumulative points or by winning a race during the season and finishing with just enough points. In this case, Buescher won the season’s second of two races at Pocono and finished in the Top 30 for points. All 16 drivers are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs for at least three races, at which time the Top 12 among them will advance to the next round. In addition to Sunday’s race at Chicagoland Speedway, Buescher’s other playoff races will be at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway. Buescher said it’s a special thing to be part of the Chase. “It’s pretty special. Everything worked out the way we needed to pull this night off the way we needed to,” he said. NOTES: the rule used to be that once a driver ran more then seven races in a season,
they were not eligible for Rookie of the Year,
but the rules changed when NASCAR required drivers to declare which series to accrue points for during the season.
So since Danica Patrick didn’t run for Sprint Cup Series points in 2012, she ran for rookie of the year in 2013.
