Gilliland expects Sunday’s race to be his last Daytona 500

David Gilliland believes his start Sunday in the Daytona 500 will be his last Daytona 500. The 41-year-old driver, who sat on the pole in 2007 and finished third in 2011, has not competed in the event since 2015 to focus on building a late model team to help develop his son, Todd. Gilliland, who drove a Kyle Busch Motorsports truck Friday night, will drive for Ricky Benton Racing in the Daytona 500: “It will probably be my last one. … We’re focusing on our [racing] business and growing it. You drive something like this [truck], it spoils you. Opportunities for a 41-year-old guy to drive that [good] stuff are few and far between.”
