Storyline – Goodyear combines speedway, short track elements in Pocono set-up: Pocono Raceway poses two main challenges in designing a tire recommendation for Goodyear – high speeds and a relative lack of banking. Because of those disparate forces, Goodyear brings a tire set-up that features a left-side tire that helps the cars with grip, while the right-side tire features a hybrid construction with some characteristics of a speedway tire (durability) and a short track tire (grip).

“In both design and the challenges it provides, Pocono is truly one of the most unique tracks on the NASCAR circuit,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Its three-turn design is famously based on three different race tracks – Indianapolis, The Milwaukee Mile and the old Trenton Speedway. With those three distinct corners, long straightaways and lack of banking, Goodyear brings a tire set-up that needs to take all of that into account. The speeds we see require that we bring elements of a speedway tire set-up, but the lack of banking and cornering needs also dictate that we provide the grip that is more in line with a short track.”

Notes – Cup cars return to Pocono on June tire set-up: Teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Pocono this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup and Xfinity teams ran at Pocono in June . . . for the Trucks, this is the same right-side tire code these teams ran at Pocono last season, with a new left-side code (construction update to align it with what is run at other speedways) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners on all four tire positions at Pocono . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

NASCAR Xfinity Series — Race No. 19 – U.S. Cellular 250

Notes – Xfinity cars return to Iowa for second race on this tire set-up: This is the same tire set-up that NASCAR Xfinity Series teams ran at Iowa in June . . . that earlier race at Iowa was the first time these teams ran either of these two Goodyear tire codes . . . this is the only track at which Xfinity teams will run either of these two tire codes . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Iowa.
