Thadeus Alvin “TA” Toomes, Jr, age 88, of Franklinville died Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.
Mr. Toomes was born December 18, 1930 the son of Thadeus and Bertha Vickery Toomes.TA was a native of Randolph County and was the owner of Mopey’s High Performance in Randleman. TA built engines for Lee Petty, Petty Enterprise, Smokey Yunick in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bill Ellis in North Wilkesboro, and Hagan Enterprise in Thomasville for Terry Labonte Racing. In addition to his parents TA is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Julian Toomes, and his brothers, George Toomes and Carl “Babe” Toomes and sister, Norma Stamey.
He is survived by his daughters: Carolyn Deaton of Seagrove, Nita Palmer of Asheboro, Sarah Upchurch (Dean) of Franklinville, and Krista Berger (Bruce) of Franklinville; son: Alvin Toomes, (Kathy) of Asheboro; grandchildren: Chris Deaton, Trisha Brown, Dale Wardlaw, Missy Burkhart, Barbie Trogdon, JD Upchurch, Ely Berger, Andy Hines, and Mark Brock; great grandchildren: Haley, Lindsi, Dylan, Maci, Cole, Noah and Alexis.
The family will receive friends Monday, January 21, 2019 from 6 – 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC and other times at his home. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 600 South Main Street, Randleman with Rev. J. Arnold Luther, Rev. Pat Withers and Rev. Pete Stamey officiating.
A private burial will be held at the Toomes family cemetery.
