Storyline – Running cool in the desert heat: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is in the middle of a stretch of races at high tire wear racetracks – most notably Darlington two weeks ago and Richmond next week.  They get a break from that this week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  The goal for Goodyear at tracks that don’t naturally wear tires like Las Vegas, is to bring tread compounds that wear sufficiently and dissipate heat to help the tires run cooler and at a more optimum level.

“Las Vegas is widely known on the NASCAR circuit as a track that does not wear tires,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.  “That is an important concern for Goodyear and the race teams because when tires don’t wear, they don’t shed rubber and therefore retain more heat.  What that requires us to do is bring tread compounds that will wear more and help the tire run cooler.  We’ve done a lot of development work in this area, with a number of tracks that have ‘smoother’ surfaces.  We’ve come up with a successful right-side tire that accomplishes that, and we now bring that to multiple tracks — Texas, Kansas, Michigan and Kentucky, in addition to Las Vegas.”

Notes – Cup, Xfinity cars run popular, “smooth track” right-side tire at Las Vegas: Teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run a different tire set-up than those in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series at Las Vegas this week . . . Cup and Xfinity teams will run the same tire set-up they ran at Las Vegas earlier this season . . . this left-side tire code is unique to this track and was run for the first time in March . . . this right-side tire code was first run at Las Vegas last fall, but will also be run at Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan and Texas throughout 2019 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Las Vegas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater  than that of the outer tire.

Notes – Trucks return to Las Vegas on same tire set-up as March: Teams in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series will a different tire set-up than those in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series at Las Vegas this week . . . for the Trucks at Las Vegas, they ran this left-side tire code for the first time this past March, while they began running this right-side tire code last September . . . this right-side is one of Goodyear’s multi-zone tread tires, with a two-inch inboard compound (Endurance Zone) for heat resistance and a 10-inch outboard compound (Traction Zone) for grip . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Las Vegas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater  than that of the outer tire.
