  • Darrell Waltrip, a three-time Winston Cup champion, will be named Friday as the interim driver of the #1 Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt Inc. Waltrip will drive the car in this weekend’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway and will stay in it until the injured Steve Park returns. Waltrip’s sale of his Winston Cup team, NASCAR truck series team and facilities in Harrisburg to Tim Beverley, a businessman from Tyler, Texas, was completed Wednesday. Beverley intends to put the Winston Cup team on hiatus for about 10 weeks while he seeks sponsorship and reorganizes the operation.

  • Wally Dallenbach, will miss the Bristol WC race as he has a hernia. Morgan Shepherd will drive the #46 First Union SABCO Chevy at the Food City 500 Sunday. Dallenbach hopes to return for Texas, if not Shepherd would fill in there also(NASCAR Online)(3-26-98)
  • Nissan British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) star Anthony Reid could be facing the green flag at the start of a NASCAR Winston Cup round this August. Plans are afoot to enter the 38-year-old Scot for the Watkins Glen road course race in New York State on August 9, in between the BTCC rounds at Thruxton and Knockhill. The owner of the unidentified team planning to run Reid in a Ford Thunderbird – possibly rebodied as a Taurus – is said to be a friend of Alec Poole, the touring car boss of Nissan Motorsports Europe, who recently attended a Winston Cup encounter at Rockingham.(AutoSportMag)(3-26-98)
