April 1 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

April 1, 1998

  • Two days after Diamond Ridge Motorsports announced that they were withdrawing from the Texas 500 in order to regroup, DRM announced the first step in their reorganization program when they named former Hendrick Motorsports czar Jimmy Johnson as general manager.(GoRacing)(4-1-98)
  • Texas GM Eddie Gossage has printed ‘Shut Up and Race’ T-shirts to sell to everyone at the Texas 500. I guess that all of the talk surrounding the driver’s opinions of the track has gotten on his nerves. As you have already heard, the drivers are not looking forward to racing at Texas due to their opinions that the track is a one groove race track and that the race will either be uneventful or accident filled.(Go200mph)(4-1-98)
  • “Wally Dallenbach will be back in the pilot’s seat for Sunday’s race. That seat will probably be a little warm due to Shephard’s decent run last week in the #46 First Union Chevy. He made the field last week and finished 24th, something that Dallenbach has not been unable to do.”(Go200mph.com)(4-1-98)
  • Jim Long former crew chief for Ricky Rudd and the #10 Tide Ford team has been officially named crew chief on the Stavola Brothers #8 Circuit City Chevrolet team(NASCAR Online)(4-1-98)
  • The first intern to work in a pit crew for a NASCAR team will report to work for Geoff Bodine for the Texas 500. Lincoln Technical Institute student Doug Merriman will work with Bodine’s team for the entire week leading up to the April 5 race at Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas. Lincoln Tech is a sponsor of the Bodine team, and will place eight automotive interns in his pit crew during the NASCAR season. Merriman attends Lincoln Technical Institute in Grand Prairie, Texas.(Prnewswire)(4-1-98)
  • Barry Bodine, son of Cup driver Geoff Bodine will drive the #63 Prime Performance Motorsports Chevy owned by Jim and Holly Clark starting at Homestead this coming weekend. Steve May will be the crew chief.(NASCAR Online), I hear the truck will be the #7 Geoff Bodine Racing Chevrolet. Geoff is leasing the team of Prime Performance Motorsports, Inc. owned by Jim and Holly Clark for this one race, basically for the provisional. It is Jim and Holly’s team, but for the purpose of getting the provisional. The sponsor will be Damron Auto Parts.(4-1-98)
