April 9 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

April 9, 1998

  • Morgan Shepherd will drive the #31 Lowes Chevy at Martinsville in place of injured regular Mike Skinner.(NASCAR Online)(4-9-98)
  • New ‘consultant’ for the Diamond Ridge Team, #29-Cup and #’s 29 & 66-BGN, Jimmy Johnson has already helped the Diamond Ridge Cup team secure sponsorship for the rest of 1998 and expects to sign the deal next Monday.(MRN-Marty), sorry folks no idea who it may be(4-9-98)
  • Jimmy Johnson also spent last weekend at Homestead finalizing a sponsor deal for the Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Craftsman truck series team.(MRN-Marty), once again no idea who.(4-9-98)
  • There was published report(AP) this week that Ricky Rudd was interested in selling his team. Well Rudd says not so fast. “What I said was, I see the writing on the wall. It seems as thought to be competitive these days you have to be in a multi-car team or have an owner that has millions of dollars to spend, I don’t. You either have to start a second team or sell your team. We’re looking at both but I wouldn’t mind doing another team.”(MRN-Marty/http://www.mrnnet.com/marty.htm)(4-9-98)
  • UPDATE: Mike Skinner suffered a broken right scapula (shoulder) and a head wound that required stitches in his accident at Texas. No idea how this will effect his future racing plans for the next race at Martinsville in two weeks.(NASCAR Online)(4-6-98) – Skinner in addition to the broken shoulder also has possible ligament damage in his right knee and will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury. Mike Dillon tested the #31 Lowes Chevy at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Tuesday.(4-7-98) – I hear it was Morgan Shepherd testing a primered #31 Lowes Chevy at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, not Dillon(4-8-98)
  • Mike Mclaughlin was actually testing for Jeff Gordon at Talladega yesterday(Wed)(That’s Racin’)(4-9-98)
  • Sterling Marlin, Wally Dallenbach and David Green tested at Greenville-Pickens Speedway(SC) today in Cup cars. Hank Parker Jr. was in the #78 BGN car.(MRM)(4-9-98)
  • Rusty Wallace is testing the #2 Miller Lite Ford at the California Speedway this week(MRN Net)(4-9-98)
  • If Jeff Purvis is still too hurt to drive the #4 Lance Snacks Chevy at the Hickory BGN Race this weekend, look for Dennis Setzer to step in.(4-9-98)
  • Greg Sacks, who suffered from stretched nerves in his neck after a crash during the Texas 500, was released from the hospital and expects to drive the #98 Cale Yarborough-owned Ford at Martinsville.(That’s Racin’)(4-9-98)(nope)
