UPDATE: NASCAR announced the launch of “NASCAR Unites – An American Salute,” a patriotic initiative uniting the NASCAR industry and fans this summer to celebrate America and support U.S. military families. NASCAR Nation will be covered from head to toe – and from splitter to spoiler – in red, white and blue to highlight the summer season, starting and ending at two traditionally patriotic summer NASCAR events held at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-27) and Daytona International Speedway (Independence Day Weekend, July 5-7). Additional activities related to the six-week initiative will take place between these “tent-pole” events, including retail programs and other sponsor promotions.
To launch the initiative, the “NASCAR Unites – An American Salute” paint scheme for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s #88 National Guard Hendrick Motorsports Chevy was revealed today in the nation’s capital for more than 30,000 children and their guests attending the 134th Annual Easter Egg Roll event at the White House.
Among those NASCAR drivers already committed to “NASCAR Unites – An American Salute” paint schemes are Earnhardt, 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion #14-Tony Stewart, #16-Greg Biffle, Danica Patrick, #2-Brad Keselowski and #99-Carl Edwards. As part of the program, NASCAR and The NASCAR Foundation will work with charities to fund initiatives that support military families. Supposedly the Goodyear tire tests are scheduled for April 24th and 25th, 2012. And supposedly teams will be able to test at Pocono on June 6th and 7th, the days before practices at the track on June 8th. The Sprint Cup Series race is scheduled for June 10th.(3-28-2012)
Free Grandstand Admission at Pocono for Goodyear Tire Testing: Goodyear Tire, the Official Tire of NASCAR, recently announced that April 24 & 25, 2012 will be the dates for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tire tests at Pocono Raceway. The Raceway is in the final stages of repaving the entire track and it’s essentially a brand new track. Goodyear engineers will provide a number of different tire compounds and will determine, through this test, what are the best compounds based on results of the test. Goodyear will then produce the tires that will be used in the June 10, 2012 Pocono 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
The drivers and teams tentatively schedule for the Pocono test are: #1-Jamie McMurray (Chevy); #5-Kasey Kahne (Chevy); #20-Joey Logano (Toyota); #22-A.J. Allmendinger (Dodge) and #43-Aric Almirola (Ford). Fans will be permitted to view both days of the test from the grandstand area at no charge. Fans should enter the parking lots via Gate # 5 (Andretti Rd.) with Gate # 11 opening at 9:00 AM. Fans will be directed to grandstand seating areas near the Start/Finish line. Concession stands will be open both dates of the test. NASCAR will allow all Sprint Cup Series teams to test the new Pocono surface with a specially scheduled test on June 6-7. Grandstands will not be open for this test, however, race fans that have Trackside RV, Reserved Fence Line RV, Reserved Infield RV or Early Bird Infield RV tickets for the Pocono 400 will have the opportunity to view the test session on Thursday for no additional charge. In fact, Gate # 1 tunnel entrance and Gate # 4 (for Trackside RV) will open at 9:00 AM on June 7 to allow early access for these fans. - Grandstands at The Glen Have New Names: Seneca. Argetsinger. Stewart. Riesbeck. Bodine. Five names woven into the fabric of Watkins Glen International; five names that now have a permanent spot at the historic track. The names will adorn the five newly constructed grandstands at Watkins Glen International following an out-pouring of suggestions from fans after the staff asked for help in renaming the seating areas. In a four-week period, The Glen received hundreds of suggestions from fans, which helped track president Michael Printup and his staff made the important grandstand name changes. “We felt the support of our fans over the past four weeks through the quality of suggestions we received for new grandstand names,” Printup said. “Emails, letters and phone calls came with ideas that spoke to the history of our legendary road course.” Selections were made based on both the history and the future of this esteemed road-racing facility and its place in the sport and region. The Glen would like to thank all who submitted their ideas. The thought behind each idea was evident.
Seneca, formerly the Silver grandstand, was a popular fan suggestion in reference to the lake on the tip of which Watkins Glen International is located. Fittingly, Seneca Lake can be seen from the facility and fans in the new Seneca grandstand will undoubtedly have a more meaningful view starting this season in 2012.
The Argetsinger grandstand, named for the man with the dream and desire to bring road racing to the United States, Cameron Argetsinger, will replace the former Red, White and Blue grandstand. This grandstand is located at the original site off the start/finish line and remain at the base of the famed Esses. Argetsinger designed the original 6.6-mile road course and the original 2.3-mile permanent course upon the hill.
Sir Jackie Stewart, famed F1 driver and popular fan suggestion for a grandstand name, was a logical choice to have an even more permanent place in Watkins Glen International history. Hailing to The Glen’s Formula 1 history, now entitled the Jackie Stewart Grandstand, Turn 10 was one of three replaced prior to the start of the 2011 season. Stewart led 271 laps in eight F1 races at The Glen, winning twice. His first victory came in 1968 and his second, from the pole, in 1972.
Once again selecting a name that spoke to the history of Watkins Glen International, Turn 11 is now Riesbeck Grandstand. In 1983, Jim Riesbeck spearheaded Corning, Inc.’s decision to revive Watkins Glen International. Riesbeck played an integral part in restoring The Glen beyond its original stature in 1948. For many years, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winners received the Steuben Glass Riesbeck Cup in Gatorade Victory Lane.
Finally, what once was the Green grandstand will now be acknowledged by a name that speaks to the region where Watkins Glen International is located, The Glen’s more recent history and a trio of brothers who play a part in each element. Bodine Grandstand was a frequent fan suggestion and an easy selection for the staff at The Glen. The Bodine brothers have competed in a combined 40 races for 3801 laps at Watkins Glen International in the top three series of NASCAR.B Tickets for the 2012 race season at Watkins Glen International are on sale now!
